The 2017 National Scout Jamboree will be held at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia July 19-28, 2017. The Summit has some of the most premiere outdoor high adventure elements in the county… whitewater rafting and kayaking, mountain bike and BMX tracks, canopy tours, awesome rock climbing opportunities, and so much more, plus hundreds of other scouting activities. This will be one of the biggest highlights of anyone's scouting career.
The Northeastern Pennsylvania Council will be sending a Contingent of 36 Boy Scouts and 4 Leaders (1 Troop) as well as 16 Venturers and 4 Leaders (2 patrols) to the Jamboree. The Council cost for the Jamboree has not been finalized yet, but will be around $1300-1500. This will include the Jamboree fee, transportation costs, and pre-Jamboree training weekends and other gear, equipment and incidentals. Fundraising opportunities will be offered to help defray some of the cost. If you start planning for it now, it works out to about $80 a month to set aside.
National has set up a great web site that has lots of information about the Summit and the Jamboree. It is at www.summitbsa.org. The initial application process begins there also. All youth and adult applicants should complete the online application and when completed, print it off and get your Scoutmaster/Advisor's signature on it. You will then send it to our Council Service Center with your $100 deposit to hold your spot. Your deposit will count against the final Jamboree cost, but will be non-refundable if you decide not to participate. Please be prepared with your BSA ID/registration number when you go online to register. The 36 / 16 youth slots will be filled on a "first come, first registered" basis. The slot will be held with the $100 deposit. All youth registrants after number 36 / 16 will be placed on a waiting list.
Boy Scout youth participants must be at least 12 years old (or have completed the 6th grade) but not older than 18 during the time of the Jamboree. Venturing youth must be a currently registered in a Venture Crew and not older than 21 during the time of the Jamboree.
The adults applying to participate must meet the qualifications for the position they are applying for. They are listed on the same web site.
Our Boy Scout contingent will have a Scoutmaster and 2 Assistant Scoutmasters, one of which must be 21 or older and the other must be at least 18 or older by the time of the Jamboree. One additional Assistant Scoutmaster will be selected who is within the ages of 18 and 20 at the time of the Jamboree.
The Venturing adult leaders must be 21 or older. One in each patrol will likely have to be female and one male, depending on the composition of the Venturing youth.
All leaders applying for these positions will go through an interview process to be selected. Adult Leaders will be selected in the early part of 2016. If an adult applicant is not selected, the $100 deposit will be refunded.
Any adults interested in serving in a Jamboree contingent leadership role with our Council must make application and submit a deposit as soon as possible!
